Casino game variants explained: European vs American roulette

Roulette remains a cornerstone of the modern casino because it is simple to follow yet mathematically precise. The key choice for players is the wheel variant: European or American. Both use the same core idea—bet on where a ball will land on a numbered wheel—but the layout and probabilities differ in ways that materially change long-term cost, risk, and suitable betting styles.

European roulette features a single zero (0) on a wheel numbered 0–36, while American roulette adds a double zero (00), expanding the wheel to 38 pockets. That extra pocket increases the house edge from 2.70% (European) to 5.26% (American) on most standard bets, meaning the American game is roughly twice as expensive over time. For even-money bets (red/black, odd/even, high/low), the presence of zeros is what breaks the symmetry: when the ball lands on 0 (and 00 in the American version), those bets typically lose. Some tables offer “La Partage” or “En Prison” rules in European roulette, which can reduce the effective edge on even-money bets to about 1.35%, making it the more efficient choice for careful bankroll management. If you enjoy higher volatility and don’t mind paying more for it, the American wheel can still be entertaining, but the maths is uncompromising.
